SPOKE CONTEXT fosters integration, invigorates arts education in schools and community engagement by collaborating with students to paint large-scale murals with internationally renowned contemporary artists. Through our hands-on workshops, students participate in the beautification of their schools and explore a new medium of creativity in a tangible way.
Public art is all around us and is an important form of public expression that distinguishes so many of our communities. We want young people to understand and discuss why it’s important. Moreover, we want them to participate in it, express themselves and take pride in their environment. We believe arts education has the ability to improve academic performance, spark innovation, foster integration, and increase students’ well-being. Furthermore, due to its large-scale and external setting, public art functions as a powerful mechanism to prompt public discourse in communities.
WHY PUBLIC ARTS EDUCATION?
Arts education is a powerful means of fostering skills that spur innovation in the economy and society, such as creativity, imagination, communication, teamwork and the development of critical and creative thinking.
When using art to inspire creativity and imagination, methodology is critical. Offering students a powerful medium such as mural painting can lead to profound results.
Because of its scope and external setting, public art can play an important role for arts advocacy in education. Given the peripheral position of arts education in schools, especially considering the renewed interest in fostering skills for innovation and integration, advocacy is needed.
Art motivates character, cultural awareness and expression, all vital components critical in youth development, particularly in light of growing diversity and the need for skills in the 21st century.
WHY SPOKE CONTEXT?
We go above and beyond content and procedural knowledge in art by providing a grand and tangible medium for artistic expression. We fully organize and facilitate public art workshops with a host of local and internationally acclaimed artists to paint the external walls of schools with students.
Our projects are co-developed and created within the specific context of each school to encourage students, faculty, families and the community to make the project a special event carefully crafted for each schools’ specific needs.
